As irony would have it, New York’s better Murray Hill is its lesser known. A shame because there’s nothing quite like an event hosted by Murray and “his” burlesque-acular Bosch-Belt humor.
And here’s your chance to catch Murray at his Boschiest: June 7 is the 7th Annual Miss Lez Pageant. In its own un-minced words: “a wildly provocative, insane, jaw-dropping beauty pageant for queer womyn in NYC that blows the lid off of ‘gender representation.’ …highly competitive, loads of fun, totally gangbusters, and is a reminder of why, if there is one place to live, New York is it (despite the proliferation of glass condos).”
The pageant features seven contestants competing in Platform, Swimsuit, Evening Gown, Interview and Talent categories. The winner gets drink tickets and $100. And yes, the $100 is in singles. Celebrity judges will include Michael “The Head” Musto.
Tip: Take a bunch of singles yourself. You never know.
Warning: If you (or your date) have ever thought, however shortly, about voting Republican this probably isn’t going to be your event. Also, there is almost certainly going to be some over-the-top behavior. This date is only for the high tolerenced and open minded.
Warning: The Sequel : If you’re thinking “Ooooh, lesbians are so hot” we beg you not to attend this event. No good can come of it.
Where: Luna Lounge, 361 Metropolitan Ave in Williamsburg; L train to Bedford stop, walk 10 minutes; G/L train to Metropolitan Ave./Lorimer St. stop, walk 10 min.; J/M/Z to Marcy Ave, and walk about 15 min.; a taxi to Luna lounge from anywhere south of 14th Street in Manhattan will be about $15 and take 20 minutes or less (non rush hour).
When: Thursday, June 7; Doors at 7:00 pm
Cost: Tickets are $15 in advance (recommended) or $20 at the door (take your chances).
Food/Before: It’s a little out of the way but if you want to keep with the theme of the night get an early dinner at Pies & Thighs at 351 Kent Ave. at South 5th Street. Fried chicken, pulled pork, catish: this is soul food at its souliest. Finish it off with Sarah’s Buck Pie.
Tip: You might want to take a taxi here as the J/M/Z train at Marcy or L at Bedford are the closest stops and is still probably a good 15 min. walk.
Food/Before: Also, you can get your mouth on some pie at Union Picnic at 577 Union Ave. Steamed clams and catfish or oyster po’ boys… and finish it off with strawberry-rhubarb pie. Was a New York magazine Best-Of in 2003. Union Picnic is also much closer: G/L train to Metropolitan Ave./Lorimer St. stop, walk 5 min.
Tip: Murray does lots of regular shows. If you miss this one be sure to catch one of his other regular acts. We’ll try to cover his Mo’ Pitkins Monday Night Bingo show soon.
