This is a dating website. That means that you must have (on some level) a date in order to take advantage of the spectacular ideas here. But there are those of you for whom that is a chore that must also be done by others. Knowing that, there are singles nights held around the city that are good for nothing and others worth noting.
On Wednesday, June 13th Soundcheck’s John Schaefer is hosting a Music Quiz Night at S.O.B’s on Varick that is definitely worthy of note. It is a bit pricey at $35 in advance/$40 at the door, but it does include a free beverage and hors d’oeuvres (but the last time I went to something like this, there were literally pepperidge farms cheese sticks, so . . . be prepared).
Normally I wouldn’t recommend something both so expensive and not exactly a date, but because this is hosted by John, it’s worth recommending. You should listen to his show, and you’ll see that this guy knows his stuff and will likely make a reasonably interesting quiz night (try the show on Hip Hop and education).
They’re actually selling tickets separately to men and women, to keep the sexes in check — so hopefully that will ensure this is a balanced event for the heteros. For those of you who don’t date male/female, send us suggestions and we’ll post them (thedatehole [at] yahoo.com)!
Tip: If you meet someone you like, take them over to Little Branch on 7th Avenue at Leroy Street. They make really good drinks, it’s prolly not terribly crowded and it’s got a nice speakeasy atmosphere. Also, since this is on a Wednesday night, the might have some live jazz (afro-cuban, standards, etc). The drinks are really quite good (although pricey at about $12 per, so you may want to bring some extra loot).
