Because It’s There - Boat Drinks.

mallory.JPG Because It’s There features date activities that seem kind of cool but have yet to be explored by your humble editors and thus cannot be officially Datehole endorsed. The segment is sponsored by the George Leigh Mallory Society for Badass Adventurers.

The sunset sail on the Schooner Adirondack is “a beautiful 2-hour sunset sail, including free beverages (beer, wine, soda and champagne… relax on the elegant, 80-foot, 1890’s-style pilot schooner and take in the sights, including the New York City skyline, Battery Park, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty.”

According to Wikipedia a schooner is “is a type of sailing vessel characterized by the use of fore-and-aft sails on two or more masts.” In my mind a schooner is like that boat Brad Pitt had the opium party on in Legends of the Fall. You know the one, where he’s passed out in the galley with a bunch of naked women. I couldn’t find a picture of that so here’s a recreation.

Anyway, floating around on a boat on a nice night can really be particularly romantic. Especially in the summer when it’s worth anything to get off the baking concrete slab of the city. Plus it’s only two hours so you don’t feel trapped at sea.

Cost: If you sign up for Goldstar Events (free) the cruise will only cost $25 per person (from $50). The dates listed are good for this discount. Though there are other dates listed at the schooner’s main site.

When: 6:00 pm
April 29 and 30; May 1,2,3 and 4.

Where: Boat departs from Classic Harbor Line - Pier 59. 18th St on the Hudson River. Take C/E trains to 23rd Street and walk (probably 15-20 min.) or take a cab.

Tip: From them: “Complimentary champagne, wine, beer and soda will be provided. (Please note: they will serve a few rounds, but it is not an unlimited booze-cruise.” Food is not served but you can bring your own.

Tip: Afterward swing over to The Half-King at 23rd Street and 10th Ave. and get the exceptionally good fish & chips and/or fried calamari to complete the oceanic theme.
